From Lt. Dan’s Legs - Straight To Your Motor Oil.

How many times have you seen advertisements blast “NEW AND IMPROVED” in your face or a message similar to that letting you know “hey, this stuff is better than the stuff we sold you last time!”  Excuse me if I am a little jaded by all the claims.

So when Conoco/Phillips 66/Kendall rolled out their “Liquid Titanium” addition to their line of motor oils awhile back,  I was a tad skeptical.   I have heard a lot of stuff has titanium in it, like golf clubs and such.  You may even remember from the movie Forrest Gump when Lt. Dan shows up at Forrest’s wedding and he is standing up.  Forrest says “Lt. Dan, you got legs!”, to which Lt. Dan says “yeah, titanium alloy, it’s the stuff they used on the space shuttle.”  So there you go.  From Lt. Dan’s legs (and the space shuttle!) straight to your motor oil.  I was still not convinced.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a believer in the products we sell.  They are terrific and I am pleased and proud to offer them.  I just wasn’t sold on liquid titanium being that big of a deal.  Maybe more of a marketing concept than an engineering marvel.  Until I was talking to some of our operations people, specifically Rick Brittain.  Rick told me that our construction /remodel /maintenance specialist in our company, Ross Whetten,  had been using a well-known national brand in his Isuzu turbo-diesel box truck.  He started to hear a noise in the turbo “like maybe a bearing was going out”.  He switched to the Kendall with liquid titanium and the noise went away.   Later, he switched back to the other brand and the noise came back.  So the next oil change it was back to Kendall with liquid titanium.  The noise went away again.  Ross told me “I’m a believer in liquid titanium.  That stuff works.”  A couple of other points.  The truck has nearly 200,000 miles on it and is still going strong.  Also, Ross was trained as a diesel mechanic and knows his stuff.   Ross’ experience made me rethink my skepticism on “new and improved.”  Liquid titanium is the real deal!
